Can I come in?

[ Her body language and words are quite carefully neutral. She doesn't want to scare her off yet. ]

[bookbending]

Okay.

[She steps back and lets the door squeak open. Her expression is very serious.]

Did something happen?

[lawbender]

I thought maybe you could tell me.

[ Yep, now you're not getting rid of her. Lin sits down, though, in an out of the way corner. She's attempting not to be intimidating. ]

[bookbending]

[Oh. If that's what this is about...

Jinora sits on her bed, fairly at ease with the earthbender.]

Did Korra say something?

[lawbender]

Not in so many words. [ But Korra wears her emotions on her sleeve. She seems to be upset about something or another about thirty percent of the time, but generally that's directed outward toward someone in the City. Not in here. ]

[bookbending]

[There's no sense in not telling Lin what happened, especially since she figured part of it out on her own. The girl hugs her knees to her chest and sighs.]

I found something in Korra's room and she wouldn't tell me about it, so I told her I deserve to know because I'm her trainer. She told me that I'm not like Tenzin--that I'm just a kid. [Jinora sniffs just a little.] And she's right.

We're not training anymore.

[lawbender]

[ Lin pours over this information for a moment. She wants to ask what Jinora found, but on the other hand, she probably doesn't want to actually know what it is, either. ]

You're the same age my mother was when she began traveling with Avatar Aang. [ Her tone may be matter-of-fact, but she's trying to be reassuring. ] That being said, I'm not sure that pushing too hard was a good idea. You are perfectly qualified to train her. But perhaps not to parent. Does that make sense?

[ Buck up, kiddo. ]

[bookbending]

[Jinora can't draw any parallels between Toph and herself. By ten, Toph was a champion--an earthbending master. Jinora's no master and she's definitely not anything like the legendary Toph Bei Fong.]

It makes sense. [Lin has a good point, as reluctant as the airbender is to accept it.] I won't push her anymore, and I won't try to be a parent.

[lawbender]

Good. That seems to be my job, unfortunately. [ Is Korra home? Well, they'll see. Lin goes to the door, pokes her head out, and yells: ] KORRA! COME HERE!

[anatural]

WHAT?

[Korra shouts this from the bathroom]

[bookbending]

[UGH. Why do people in this house think that yelling is the best form of communication? Jinora just sighs and braces herself for the inevitable: Chief Bei Fong forcing her to talk to Korra.]

[lawbender]

COME HERE! [ Lin proves Jinora right. She has very little patience for questions some days. ]

[anatural]

I'M COMING!

[GEEZ, LET A GIRL GET OFF THE TOILET. Korra finishes up and comes out into the hallway.]


What?!

[lawbender]

I want to talk to you. And Jinora.

[ Her tone is more reasonable now. She gestures for Korra to come into Jinora's room. with her. ]

[bookbending]

[Jinora stays on her bed, cross-legged and (outwardly) calm.

She'd really rather not have this discussion happen.]

[anatural]

[Korra crosses her arms.]

What for?

[lawbender]

You know why. This has gone on long enough.

[bookbending]

[Jinora looks from Lin to Korra and back. Lin seems distinctly displeased.

The girl should say sorry, maybe, but she's not. She'll try to act less like Tenzin--like a parent; she won't apologize for being worried, though.]

[anatural]

Hey, don't look at me. I'm not the one who started it.

[bookbending]

[Well. If Korra's going to be immature.]

You're the one with the box.

[lawbender]

I'm looking at you because you're seventeen and should be mature enough to handle a little disagreement like an adult. [ Lin crosses her arms and stares. ] You need to apologize to Jinora.

[anatural]

I'm eighteen! [She's not sure how long she's been 18, but she knows it happened because that's why she had to get a job. It also occurs to her that that's not exactly helping her case]

BESIDES! She snuck into my room and went through my stuff!

[lawbender]

[ Yeah, you're really not helping by correcting your age. Lin rolls her eyes. Then she points at Korra. ] I'm not saying that Jinora was in the right here either. You both need to apologize. Your training is important. You can't stop learning airbending because you're upset with your master. You need discipline.

And you need restraint. [ At this, she eyes Jinora. ]

[bookbending]

[Not only is being on the receiving end of one of Lin's disapproving looks daunting, but Jinora finds being told that she needs restraint upsetting. She's not used to falling short of expectations like this.

Then again, she's also not used to apologizing.]

I-- [She glances over at Korra. Why shouldn't she be the one who apologizes first? She's older and she was the one who was overreacting, not Jinora.] --I shouldn't have looked through your box.

[Not quite an apology. Indignation is still winning its war with shame at being found lacking, however slightly.]

[anatural]

I didn't call the training off! She did!

[She crosses her arms. She's tired of being embarrassed and ashamed of herself, but being tired of shame doesn't mean it goes away. Now she simply refuses to acknowledge it. It makes her indiscriminately willful.

Jinora's non-apology doesn't soften the older girl...much.]

Promise you'll stay out of my stuff in the future.
